Dogs may make up a lot of the adorable faces in front of my camera, but they definitely aren’t the only pets who deserve their moment in the spotlight. Meet Moochie!
Moochie is an adorable Lionhead rabbit who recently celebrated his 5th birthday, and his family wanted to mark the occasion with something special: professional photos of their very fluffy little guy and the people who love him. And honestly, I will never turn down the opportunity to photograph a bunny.
Moochie’s mom described him to me before the session as energetic and curious, and that turned out to be a pretty accurate description. Rabbits aren’t exactly known for taking posing directions, so photographing them is less about getting them to do exactly what you want and more about being patient, following their lead, and being ready when the moment happens.
Which is actually pretty similar to photographing most of my dog clients!
For Moochie’s birthday photos, we kept things simple while still giving a little nod to the occasion. We incorporated a wooden number 5 for a few photos to commemorate the milestone without turning the session into an elaborate themed setup. My photography style has always leaned toward keeping the focus on the pet, and with a face like Moochie’s, you really don’t need much else.
Of course, we made sure to get plenty of portraits of the birthday boy himself. With that signature Lionhead mane, Moochie is basically built for close-ups. We gave him the freedom to explore and be curious while I worked around him, capturing the expressions and little moments that showed off his personality.
Moochie may only weigh a fraction of what many of the dogs I photograph do, but the relationship his family has with him is every bit as big. Our pets are part of our families whether they’re dogs, cats, rabbits, or something else entirely, and that’s exactly why I love documenting these relationships.
Birthday sessions are also such a fun excuse to stop and capture a pet exactly as they are at this particular point in their life. Five-year-old Moochie is energetic. He’s curious. He’s ridiculously fluffy. And he’s very clearly loved.
Someday, those little details are exactly what his family will want to remember.
Happy 5th birthday, Moochie! Here’s to plenty more birthdays, adventures, treats, and opportunities to show off that magnificent Lionhead hair.
